Computer Giveaway to Benefit Students

At Campbell elementary, Ms. Truslow's 4th grade math class is equipped with computers and even a smart board, but not every student has access to a computer at home.

"If simply just to Google or research something they may not understand in school. If they don't understand how I'm teaching something, maybe they could look it up and find another way," said Truslow.

This year the Computer Shoppe has teamed up with Youngstown Litter Control and Recycling to give away ten desktop computers to needy students grades K-12. The computers will be given away during a drawing.

"I see people coming in all the time, kids coming in a lot of them really want their own computer. Parents can't afford it. I figured Youngstown's been good to me, so I figured I'd give back to Youngstown and some of the kids," said Robert Peral, owner of the Computer Shoppe.

The computers are recycled Dell Opti-Plex desktops and contain 1.8 gig processors, 512 of RAM, 40-80 gig hard drives with CD burners.

All students in Mahoning County are welcome to come to the Computer Shoppe, fill out a ticket with their name, address and phone number to be entered. Ten winners will be drawn December 17.

"They don't have to be present for the drawing. We will contact them after the drawing and get their computers to them in time for Christmas," said Jennifer Jones with Youngstown Litter Control and Recycling.

The Computer Shoppe takes old computers and other electronics year round to fix, reuse and recycle properly.
